STEERING COMMITTEE

Collaborators helping enhance data sharing, networking, and collaboration.

CanAvian is a network of data portals and collaborators that support a broad constituency of data contributors and users. It is led by a Steering Committee composed of members from the collaborating organizations. The Committee is responsible for ensuring progress is made against the network’s Mission and Vision and provides guidance on CanAvian operations. The steering committee members are:

Dr. Erin Bayne

Co-Director, Science Centre (ABMI)

Professor, Faculty of Science (University of Alberta)

The Bayne Lab works to understand the cumulative ecological impacts of human and natural activities on biodiversity. They work closely with government, industry, and conservation organizations across Canada to advance the science of ecological monitoring using sensor technologies like ARUs and wildlife cameras.

Dr. Charles Francis

Manager, Bird Population Monitoring (Environment and Climate Change Canada)

Charles Francis has been working with the Canadian Wildlife Service since 2002 as Manager of the Wildlife Monitoring and Assessment team. His team is responsible for coordination of bird-monitoring programs, as well as ensuring that bird monitoring data are appropriately disseminated, analysed, and reported to support conservation decision-making.

Corrina Copp

Director, Information Centre (ABMI)

Corrina Copp has been working for the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) since 2015. In her role as the Information Centre Director, Corrina leads and supports the ABMI’s Quality Assurance Program, Online Reporting, Data Analytic Tools, and WildTrax. She has been actively involved in the development of the WildTrax platform since it was first envisioned and developed. She continues to work with her team and the broader community to ensure WildTrax continues to meet the needs of users.

Denis Lepage 1

Dr. Denis Lepage

Senior Director, Data Science and Technology (Birds Canada)

Denis Lepage is the lead of the data science team at Birds Canada, whose main goal is to enable the collection, management, interpretation, and dissemination of information on birds in support of conservation. Denis and his team are responsible for delivering and supporting Birds Canada’s NatureCounts and Motus Wildlife Tracking System platforms for thousands of users, including citizen scientists, researchers, and policy makers. Denis also has a keen interest in managing taxonomic data for birds through the Avibase website.

Requests for new collaborators are evaluated on a case by case basis by the Steering Committee. CanAvian strives to establish an inclusive membership in the management committee that is diverse with respect to age, sex/gender, geographical locale, ethnicity, work, and cultural and educational backgrounds, as appropriate to the initiative.
