Open, accessible information democratizes conversations about shared natural resources.

Adapting Industrial Practices

Data aggregation makes it easier for land-users to incorporate the latest information.

Definitions

For the purposes of CanAvian, we define several key terms and concepts as follows:

Collaborators

Organizations that share a common core purpose, approach, and commitment to the network’s core vision. Collaboration with CanAvian can be achieved through one or more of the following mechanisms:

  1. Operating an avian data portal that fills a need within the open data workflow for bird data within Canada
  2. Hosting a large, aggregated dataset of bird data representing multiple organizations, which is contributed to one of the outlined data portals
  3. Being a founding member and/or funder of CanAvian

Each collaborator elects one representative to the CanAvian Steering Committee.

Steering Committee

The Committee is responsible for ensuring progress is made against the network’s Mission and Vision and provides guidance on CanAvian operations; the Committee is composed of members representing the collaborating and founding organizations.

Data

Quantitative, observation-based datasets of avian occurrence, abundance, and distribution and their associated metadata, collected through research and monitoring.

Information

Products, tools, and publications that summarize data in order to increase its accessibility and use.

Data portal

An online platform hosted by a collaborating organization that holds avian data and provides public access to datasets.

Data contributor

A data owner who has contributed their data to a collaborating organization and who has data available within one of the networked portals.

Data user

A person who accesses, discovers and downloads or uses data or information from a data portal within the CanAvian network to use in their own analyses, research, or applications or to support decision-making
